Professor Ratan Lal Brahmachary was born in 1932 in Dacca, presently in Bangladesh. His father was a Head Master of Shikaripara Uchha Vidyalaya, Dacca. Professor Brahmachary passed his schooling from Dacca and graduated from Dacca University. He had keen interest in nature from his early childhood. He started his career in physics as a student of Professor Satyendranath Bose and later changed his research interest. He joined Indian Statistical Institute in 1957 and founded the Embryology unit in Indian Statistical Institute. Professor R. L Brahmachary was awarded D. Sc. (Honoris Causa), from Calcutta University. He was the pioneer of tiger pheromone studies in India. He was interested in Animal Behaviour and visited Africa 14 times to observe wild life. He has several scientific publications and is famous for his popular Bengali writings. Professor Brahmachary died on 13th February 2018 at the age of 86.
