Summary: The present publication "Indian Agriculture in Brief 2000", twenty seventh in series, is designed to give a synoptic view of Indian agriculture on almost all aspects of Indian agriculture. It also incorporates tables giving data on certain important parameters such as population, labour force, imports/exports of food grains and national income originating from agriculture sector. This is expected to provide an overall view of India's agricultural economy in its broadest perspective. The inclusion of international data on yields rates etc. enables reader to assess the performance of Indian agriculture vis-à-vis other countries in the world. An attempt has been made to include in this publication latest data till 1998-99. However, in certain cases the data till 1997-98 or for earlier period are included due to non-availability of latest information. State-wise statistics have been included for some of important variables such as area, production, yield, land utilisation, fertilizer consumption, credit and wholesale prices of verious agricultural commodities.
