Rajasthan made impressive progress during the 1980s and 1990s. The economy diversified significantly and growth rate accelerated. School enrollment, literacy and life expectancy increased markedly, while gender inequity decreased. Poverty headcount declined by more than half.

New challenges have emerged since 1999, threatening the progress in economic growth, social development and poverty reduction. Recognizing these challenges, the Government of Rajasthan has started implementing policy reforms to address them.

The Report "Rajasthan - Closing the Development Gap" has been prepared at the request of the Government of Rajasthan. It contributes to the dialogue between the government, private sector and civil society on Rajasthan's development prospects and priorities. The Report seeks to inform stakeholders about policy issues confronting the state and assistance strategy that can best serve its interests.
