India's ambitious e-governance plan requires development of technologies for online Handwritten Recognition (OHWR) of Indian languages to reach out to literate population of Indians who don't know English. Step in this direction has been initiated by funding research for six Indian languages vis-a-vis Bengali, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. The prime task is character recognition of these languages using various techniques such as Hidden Markov Models, Neural Networks, SVM Machines etc.
Character level efficiency of 80-85% has been achieved. The enhancement of this work for word level recognition is underway. The technical reports for the respective languages covering the specific nuances of each language are presented in this issue. The future task will be application of these technologies in designing the specific forms of e-governance applications providing an easy interface to the user.
