Reviews recent advances in water supply and sanitation technologies in light of the special needs and conditions found in developing countries. Both urban and rural communities are considered, with information on their different characteristics relevant to the selection of appropriate technologies. The objective is to inform planners and policy-makers of available technologies, including several that have been developed recently, illustrate their most appropriate applications, and point out any problems in design or performance. Throughout, emphasis is placed on the need to select technologies that are appropriate, affordable, and consistent with the sociocultural attitudes of the people concerned
