The Directorate of Economics & Statistics, J&K has been bringing out Statistical Newsletter since long to keep abreast the readers with the latest developments at the Directorate. This publication aims at briefing the planning & statistical personnel working in the country and also in entire state about the activities carried out by the Directorate from time to time. This publication presents news items, articles and views on economic and statistics related matters and as such serves as an effective medium of communication with official statisticians, planners and readers. newsletter covers both official and personal views on diverse issues.
The publication of this Newsletter is indeed an important activity of the Directorate of Economics & Statistics as it provides a channel to the readers and the statisticians to express their views. It also promotes a culture of dialogue and discussion which is very essential for improving and updating knowledge and expertise of the staff associated with development planning and economic analysis. The present Volume is 11th Issue in the series pertaining to the period January to June 2009. This issue is of special interest as it interalia presents the proceedings of the third Statistics Day celebrated on 29th June 2009 to commemorate 116th Birth Anniversary of Late Professor P.C. Mahalanobis, the father of Modern Indian Statistical System. To enrich the contents of this publication, papers presented by the participants during the course of Statistic's Day celebrations are included in this special issue of the Newsletter.
In the present era of liberalisation and rapidly changing socio-economic scenario, the Statistical Cadre has to meet the ever increasing demand from policy makers and planners for timely and accurate data. The Statistical System has, therefore, an important role to play in these efforts for generating accurate, relevant, credible and timely data for the users. Evidently the Statistical System will have to be reinforced to meet the emerging data needs of a dynamic socio-economic environment. To restore trust in statistics, the organisational personnel are requested to address the credibility and quality aspects of data continuously. Besides, all the members of J&K Economics and Statistics Gazetted Service and sub-ordinate Economics & Statistics Service are requested to contribute articles/notes on the activities being carried out by them in different capacities, enabling us to make the upcoming issues of this newsletter more interesting and useful. They are also requested to share their field experiences and statistical knowledge with this organisation regularly.
