The traditional, constantly expanded flagship publication of the Federal Statistical Office is the comprehensive statistical inventory of the state of the country and offers an up-to-date overview of 21 topics: from population to space and the environment, work and wages, prices, companies and employees, housing and construction, transport, health, public finances to education, the financial situation of households and crime.

Held entirely in German and French and with an overview chapter each in English and Italian, it offers summarizing and commenting texts, explanatory glossaries and numerous graphics and maps. A table section and a keyword register provide an overview and in-depth knowledge of each topic.

A special chapter in the 2021 edition, based on a project that the FSO carried out with the Landesmuseum Zürich and the Sotomo research center, offers some surprising topics on the basis of maps on topics from historical censuses (gender and age, foreign population, religious landscape and language) Insights into important developments in the long term
